Craftsmanship
Mr. Charles, goatherd and neighbor to my grandparents, told me Appalachian barn quilts originated in his hometown.
He also told me how to take a piece of plywood and some frog tape to make my own.
His conversation had hollers and corners like the hills from whence he came, creativity ringing bowls of earth and my imagination — except it hit my ears first, and that’s important.
Craftsmanship. Simple. I won’t try to dress it up.
We were just talking goats and the Lord, and, of course, the barn quilt.
Just talking a little of nothing and turning up with something.
